City celebrates 20 years of ART this World Aids Day

The theme for World Aids Day on 1 December is ‘Equal Rights, Equal Access’ which speaks to creating awareness that every resident has access to preventative and treatment programmes.
World Aids Day 2024 also marks 20 years since the roll-out of antiretroviral treatment in the public sector, and the progress made in the fight against HIV/Aids.
Since then, millions of lives have been transformed. The expansion of ART has not only reversed the high mortality rate and improved the health of those living with HIV, but has also played a crucial role in reducing new infections.
Today, more than 230 000 residents in Cape Town are receiving this life-saving treatment, with nearly 99% receiving their treatment at a primary health care facility. This network of support is testament to the City’s collective efforts and dedication to making healthcare accessible for all.
There have also been significant strides in HIV testing efforts, with more than 90% of HIV-positive people in the Western Cape knowing their status. Innovative approaches, such as HIV self-screening, are key in reaching residents who may not otherwise attend healthcare facilities.
One of the challenges remains keeping patients engaged in care, a very real issue for anyone on life-long treatment. Starting treatment early and sticking to it is crucial to enhancing one’s own health and well-being, but also contributes to the overall reduction of HIV transmission within the community.
Increased awareness through education, condom distribution, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have empowered communities to take charge of their health.
‘World Aids Day serves as a powerful reminder that access to healthcare and support is a human right. We have much to celebrate when one considers the many positive interventions in the fight against HIV/Aids, and I commend each and every person who has had a hand in achieving this progress. However, we must ensure that no one is left behind. Let’s continue working together to create awareness and support individuals on ART to stay healthy and to prevent further transmission within our communities. By promoting safe practices and fostering awareness, we can continue to reduce transmission rates and ensure that everyone has the resources they need to stay healthy,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
